Messier 46 Open Star Cluster with Planetary Nebula

Messier 46 & NGC 2348

Star clusters tend to be boring, but at least M46 has a little excitement in it! Hidden away in this grouping of 500 stars approximately 5,000 light years away is the planetary nebula NGC 2348. Similar to the more famous Messier 97 Owl Nebula, this little guy is actually 2,000 light years closer than the cluster and likely has nothing to do with it. Space is 3D!

In the category of “weird space names”, NGC 2348 has two alternative names – the Rotten Egg Nebula.
