This was one of the most frustrating targets I’ve completed. I first tried capturing Messier 105 (NGC 3379 for you “New General Catalog” fans) on Wednesday night, but unfortunately forgot to set the gain on my photos. The result was an underexposed mess that wasn’t salvagable in photoshop.

That was only part of the mess that was Wednesday night’s session. My focus motor was having issues with Sequence Generator Pro, and I ultimately had to manually focus the scope (using the Celestron focuser software). I didn’t eyeball it quite properly, and all my photos were off enough to make my captures of M88 and M87 useless as well.

On Thursday night’s session, I was very attentive to the focusing, ensuring my stars were small and round. I wasn’t going to waste another night of clear, dark skies again. But with an over focus on focus (see what I did there?) I didn’t reset the gain on M105 and I again had more than an hour’s worth of useless underexposed data.

Third time’s a charm, and on Saturday night I was able to get a good two hours on this trio of galaxies! Although elliptical galaxies aren’t the sexiest objects in the sky, I like the balance with the small spiral NGC 3389 and happy with the colouring in the neighbouring stars.
